so how does that relate to laser eye surgery such as LASIK?

When I had my laser eye surgery 12 years ago, the lasers operated at a speed of 40Hz. Today's modern lasers operate at more than 10 times that speed at 500Hz and beyond. Why does speed matter? Basically the faster the laser, the more accurate it is.

As the laser works to reshape your eye during laser eye surgery, it removes a precise minuscule amount of tissue with each pulse in an exact location. An average laser treatment involves over 1000 pulses. The precision of each pulse depends on your eye tissue remaining in its normal hydrated state. If your eye tissue dries out too much because the laser is taking too long, then the accuracy of your treatment drops.

Can lasers get any faster?
